Normal Restoration

A normal restoration refer to a dental filling, which is treatment aimed at restoring a tooth that had been damaged by decay. At Dental Artz Clinic, we will remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area and then fill the cavity with a filling material. When filling a decayed tooth, it is important that we close off spaces where bacteria could enter, in order to prevent further decay.

There a many different materials used for fillings, including: gold, porcelain, composite resin (tooth coloured fillings) and amalgam fillings (silver, copper, tin and zinc). However, one type of filling material might work for one patient but not for another, as the success of the material depends on the extent of the repair, allergies, location in your mouth, and costs. Consideration for the different filling materials include:

Gold fillings – Gold fillings may be considered as the best filling material for many reasons. However, it is the most expensive choice and requires multiple dental visits to complete.

Amalgam fillings – Amalgam fillings are durable, resistant to wear, and relatively inexpensive. However, because of the fact that it is sliver in colour, it is quite visible and aesthetically displeasing. It should therefore not be used on front teeth.

Composite resins – composite resins are designed to match the colour of your teeth and is therefore used where a natural appearance is desired. Composite resin might not be ideal material to fill larger cavities, as they may chip and wear overtime. It can also be stained by coffee, tea and tobacco products.

Porcelain fillings – porcelain fillings (known as inlays or onlays) are produced in a lab and bonded to the tooth. Designed to match the natural colour of the tooth and resist staining, porcelain fillings cover most of the tooth. It costs almost as much as gold fillings.
